A Number (October 7, 2011)

It’s only a number
like one, or two, or three.
And all it is is just the measure
of the pull of gravity.

So what is the reason for our obsession
over what a tiny label may say?
Is that meaningless number
worth throwing your life away?

Why does that mirror lie?
Is says your value depends on those numbers there.
If they are too high next to the rest of the world,
then you will not compare.

Do you starve so that you will matter?
Do you purge so all will see
that in time those numbers will fall,
and the mirror will, at last, reflect beauty?

Why aspire to reach for those numbers
when someone’s zero is another’s four?
Those numbers have no reason or rhyme.
And you are worth so much more.
