When I first really did Weight Watchers (we aren’t counting my failed attempts on doing it on my own when I had no idea what I was doing) it was right at the start of my FAVORITE program: Momentum.

Sure, I like PointsPlus, and after years of learning this program, I don’t know if I could go back to Momentum, but I do miss it.

Now, don’t get me wrong. Free fruit is a blessing and a curse. I love being able to eat a banana or apple without guilt, but I also wonder if I’m going a little overboard at times. I try to keep my fruit portions reasonable, but it’s easy to go overboard at times, and 0 points doesn’t necessarily mean 0 calories.

Eating out was simpler too. If there was no nutritional information except for calories, I just divided the calories by 50, and it was a lot more accurate than the current rule that a PointsPlus is around 35-40 calories. I could eyeball my Points when grocery shopping a LOT better than I can now.

And, if I didn’t have nutritional information, I didn’t stress about how big the chicken breast I had was. I just counted 5 points for it using SetPOINTS, and ate until satisfied.

In fact, I was more relaxed about everything.

When I first did Momentum, I was only 17, so I didn’t have access to Etools. I had my Points Slider and books. I tracked everything on paper, and I lost weight. I used a dinky food scale that was probably completely inaccurate and definitely NOT digital. Even if I had access to a digital scale, I don’t think it would have made much of a difference. In my calculations, cooked chicken breast was around 1 Point per ounce. If I had a piece of chicken that was 4-3/8 ounces, I would have counted 4 Points. I based it on the first number.

Fruit had points, but if I was having a bad day, I would break the “rules” about SetPOINTS and have a bowl of grapes for 2 points to ward off a binge. Even with counting points for Fruit and excessive calories in vegetables (when I was more concerned about accuracy after I turned 18), my Points seemed to go a lot further than they do now.

Sometimes, I really do wish I can go back. I have looked for free apps on my phone to make tracking easier, but I’ve gotten so accustomed to the current plan that I’m not sure I can ever go back. I have even looked for lists of the old Points values online, but relearning everything might just be too much to handle.

So, for now, I’ll stick to PointsPlus, but things may change. I wonder if I would ever be able to go back to the simplicity of PointsPlus in 2009. Or is that impossible for me now that I’ve been so accustomed to being super accurate with weighing, measuring, and tracking?

Knowledge may equal power, but it can also lead to obsessiveness.
